About GreenRif

Practical gardening advice you can act on this weekend — written for real yards, real climates and real budgets.

Why we started

Gardening advice online is often vague (“plant in spring”), written for a different climate, or buried under filler. GreenRif exists to give home gardeners in the United States clear, specific answers: when to plant for your USDA hardiness zone, how far apart, how much water, what that yellow leaf means, and what to do about it.

What we cover

We publish guides in four areas: vegetables and herbs, flowers and houseplants, soil and fertilizer, and pests and plant problems. Measurements are given in US units with metric equivalents where they help.

  • Flowers & Houseplants — Flowers, shrubs and houseplants that thrive: light, watering, blooming tips and simple care routines for indoors and out.
  • Soil & Fertilizer — Build healthier soil and feed plants right: compost, homemade fertilizers, mulch, soil testing and lawn feeding.
  • Pests & Plant Problems — Identify pests, diseases and plant problems like yellow leaves or mildew, and fix them with the least-toxic method first.

How we work

Every guide starts with the question a gardener actually has and answers it in the first few sentences. We check planting dates, spacing, rates and safety information against university Cooperative Extension services, the USDA, the EPA and other primary sources, and we list those sources at the end of each article. Guides are reviewed by a human editor before publication and updated when recommendations change. You can read the details in our editorial policy.

Gardening is local. Where advice depends on your climate, soil or region, we say so, and we encourage you to check with your local extension office — their advice is free and tailored to where you live.
